Brain science shows us that we feel before we think.

In other words, when it comes to making decisions, the emotional part of our brain wins out over the rational part.

When negative emotions arise, this depletes your energy, making you less focused and less likely to get things done.

However, there is a way to train your brain to:

  • suppress and better control those unwanted feelings; and
  • shift more easily into goal-oriented (rather than emotionally-oriented) behaviours.

  1. Sit on a chair. Ensure your feet are firmly on the floor.
  2. Inhale and exhale. Breathe in deeply through your nose, and out through your mouth.
  3. Speak. Each time you breathe out, say aloud one of these words: peace, gratitude, or compassion.
